Arts Visuals

Mataró is a city with a strong artistic leaning. This creative interest can be seen in the great number of initiatives and artistic projects in diverse fields which originate in the city. There are multiple mediums and techniques, and the legacy of the masters is great. The city has room for both classic artists and those who use new languages and mediums. Plastic art and new technologies are not  exhausted when it comes to developing the expression of an idea or emotion.

At the IMAC we intensely promote support for creativity: we have in the city a regional centre which supports the creative process and experimentation, as well as the exchange of artistic ideas: Can Xalant. In addition, when the exhibition space permits, we organize a complimentary pedagogical service for the schools of the city, and with art students in particular, set up projects with their direct participation. We also organize annually the Exhibition of Young Art, through which young creators are given the opportunity to make their projects reality and show their work in a collective exhibition. The winner of the exhibition receives a scholarship and holds an individual exhibition at a municipal gallery.

Can Xalant. Centre of creativity and contemporary thinking
Can Xalant Is the first Creative Centre of Visual Arts and Contemporary Thinking in the regional network, the result of an agreement between Mataro City Council and the Entitat Autonoma de Difusió Cultural of the Department of Culture of the Generalitat of Catalonia.

The project aims to establish the necessary programs for research and production in the field of the visual arts. With this objective in mind, the Centre offers the artistic community and all cultural agents who require the necessary resources, the chance to develop their own projects, giving special attention to emerging artists with ties to the region and the social context in which they find themselves.

Ca l'Arenas. Centre of Art of the Museum of Mataró
The Centre of Art of the Museum of Mataró has three spaces allocated to the exhibition of visual arts projects of young artists: Room 2, the Gallery and la Finestra (a television on the outside of the façade of the building). The projects commissioned to the artists have as a main characteristic the fact that they are directly related to the thematic axis of the season of Ca l'Arenas.
